Rugby World has introduced a new rugby draft game called Invincible XV, inspired by popular online games in football. As anticipation builds for the Rugby World Cup, Invincible XV has rapidly become a social media sensation, capturing the attention of rugby fans looking to build their ultimate team.
Invincible XV challenges players to assemble the greatest rugby team of all time through a random draft process. Players aim to compile a 15-man squad capable of winning an imagined 20-game tour against some of the best rugby teams in history, including legendary sides like the 1974 British & Irish Lions and the back-to-back World Cup-winning Springboks of 2023. The game utilizes a random simulator that allows players to experiment and strategize, with each attempt yielding unique team compositions.
To participate in Invincible XV, players select their game mode, choosing from options that feature all-time greats, World Cup champions, Six Nations victors, Rugby Championship winners, or successful British & Irish Lions tours. Players can also set the difficulty level, with options for easy, medium, or hard modes, determining the number of redraws allowed. Furthermore, players can opt to see player ratings or select blindly based on their rugby knowledge. After assembling their team, the challenge begins, necessitating an unbeaten run through simulations of 20 international matches.
Rugby World shared its own experience playing Invincible XV, initially confident in assembling a strong team but ultimately experiencing challenges. They selected the easy mode, enabling a maximum of three redraws and set out to build a capable line-up featuring stars like Sir Gareth Edwards and Jonny Wilkinson. Despite their efforts, the team's final rating fell to 89 out of 100, resulting in a projected record of 19 wins and 1 loss, narrowly falling short against the strong 2003 England World Cup-winning side.
The growing popularity of games like Invincible XV underscores a shift in rugby culture, as fans enjoy revisiting nostalgic players and competing against peers online. The allure lies not only in the gameplay but also in the opportunity to showcase rugby knowledge and connection to the sport's history. With rugby enthusiasts dominating the discussions on social media, Invincible XV appears to be solidifying its status as a favored pastime within the rugby community.
Whether enjoying a casual game with friends or diving deep into strategy, Invincible XV has become a highlight for many fans during this exciting time leading up to the Rugby World Cup.
