Alexander Zverev defeated Jakub Mensik in four sets during the French Open semifinals on Friday, moving within one win of securing his first Grand Slam title. The second-seeded Zverev triumphed with scores of 7-5, 6-2, 3-6, 6-3, and will next face Italy's Flavio Cobolli in the final, following Cobolli's unopposed advancement due to the withdrawal of Matteo Arnaldi over health issues.
In his second French Open final appearance, Zverev aims to claim a long-sought championship at the major tournament. Despite encountering previous disappointments with three final defeats, including a setback against Carlos Alcaraz at Roland Garros two years ago, he expressed optimism about his performance. "This is a Grand Slam, it's best of five, things are going to happen, opponents are going to play better. I managed it," Zverev remarked.
He is regarded as the favorite to win against either Cobolli, the 10th seed, or Arnaldi, who ranks world number 104, as he approaches his goal of lifting a Grand Slam trophy. Having reached his 11th semifinal, Zverev demonstrated his wealth of experience against the 20-year-old Mensik, who was making his debut in the latter stages of a major event. Mensik began to lose steam following his earlier five-set matches and ultimately struggled to maintain his form.
Zverev showed resilience, overcoming the challenges posed by Mensik's drop shot strategy and managing the pressure after the exits of notable players Jannik Sinner and Novak Djokovic earlier in the tournament. Speaking to the press, Zverev acknowledged the mental aspect of competing, offering light-hearted insight, "Pure emptiness, there's absolutely nothing in my head. We're athletes, very few of us have anything in our heads. Sometimes it's easier to be stupid and not to think too much."
In the semifinals, Zverev took a tight first set after breaking through in the 11th game and providing strong service game within the second set. Though Mensik took a medical time-out early in the third set for a neck issue, he rallied to win that set impressively, but ultimately could not maintain his momentum, falling behind in the fourth. Zverev advanced to the final, wrapping up the match on his first match point after a decisive play that led Mensik to net a backhand.
Zverev hopes to break a title drought lasting 14 months, dating back to April 2025 when he last won a clay-court event in Munich.
