JJ Wetherholt leads Cardinals to 6-4 victory over Athletics

JJ Wetherholt hit a two-run homer, and José Fermín drove in two with a double as the St. Louis Cardinals defeated the Oakland Athletics 6-4 on Tuesday night in West Sacramento, California. The Cardinals snapped a two-game losing streak and improved their major league-best road record to 14-7, maintaining a streak of not losing three straight road games this season.

Starting pitcher Andre Pallante (4-3) struck out four batters and allowed four hits along with three runs across five innings. Following Pallante, four relievers took the mound, with Riley O'Brien securing his 12th save by working around a leadoff walk in the ninth inning. Wetherholt's powerful shot to right field off Athletics pitcher Joel Kuhnel in the sixth inning extended the Cardinals' lead to 6-3.

The Cardinals scored four runs in the first inning, beginning with Jordan Walker's single that drove in the first run. Fermín then doubled to bring in two more runs, followed by a single from Yohel Pozo that scored Fermín. The Athletics responded in the second inning when Nick Kurtz hit an RBI single, extending his on-base streak to 35 games, the longest for an Athletics player since Jack Cust's 40-game streak from August 28, 2008, to April 18, 2009. Additionally, Shea Langeliers hit an RBI double in the same inning and later launched a 448-foot home run in the eighth.

Jeffrey Springs (3-3) served as the Athletics' starting pitcher and yielded four runs in five innings. The Athletics managed to compile six hits throughout the game, with Iván Herrera contributing two of the Cardinals' total of 10 hits. St. Louis left runners in scoring position with a 3 for 11 efficiency.

The Cardinals will continue their series against the Athletics on Wednesday, with left-handed pitcher Matthew Liberatore (2-1, 4.07 ERA) set to start against Athletics right-hander J.T. Ginn (1-1, 3.62).
