Nigeria qualify for FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup Poland 2026

Nigeria’s U20 girls, known as the Falconets, officially secured their place in the 2026 FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup in Poland, after a challenging afternoon in Lilongwe where they emerged 3-2 aggregate winners against Malawi’s Young Scorchers. Despite suffering a narrow 1-2 defeat in the second leg on Saturday, the solid basis established in Ikenne, a week prior, which included an own goal from visiting defender Maureen Kenneth and a stunning strike by Kindness Ifeanyi for a 2-0 lead, proved to be adequate for Nigeria to maintain their impressive record of never missing a World Cup at this level.

The host side quickly tested Nigeria’s defensive organization, taking the lead early in the first half following a defensive error that allowed a Malawi striker to score and spark hope of a comeback. Nigeria sought to respond with urgency, as Kindness Ifeanyi, a persistent threat down the right side, sent a dangerous cross into the area. Favour Nkwocha connected powerfully but struck the woodwork, denying Nigeria a crucial equalizer. The Young Scorchers entered halftime with a 1-0 lead.

Tension heightened in the 55th minute when another rare mistake in Nigeria’s defense allowed the Young Scorchers to score again.
