Chiefs reveal designs for $3B dome stadium

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- The Kansas City Chiefs unveiled the first renderings of their planned $3 billion dome stadium on Wednesday, which is scheduled to open for the NFL's 2031 season. The designs, created by Kansas City architecture firm MANICA, highlight a fully enclosed dome featuring a ceiling made of translucent ethylene tetrafluoroethylene panels.

The new stadium's design aims to pay tribute to Arrowhead Stadium, the Chiefs' historical home that opened in 1972. Like Arrowhead, the dome will boast a symmetrical, curved exterior along with a scalloped upper deck in each end zone, maintaining the Chiefs' unique architectural style compared to other NFL venues.

In a statement, team owner Clark Hunt noted that the stadium will accommodate 70,000 fans and is specifically designed to amplify crowd noise, a request Hart heard from many season-ticket holders in recent surveys. Arrowhead Stadium previously regained the Guinness World Record for the loudest stadium in 2014, with fans reaching a deafening 142.2 decibels.

"From the beginning, our goal has been to build something that improves the gameday experience for every single fan," Hunt remarked. "This new stadium will do just that. It's spectacular. It honors the rich legacy of this franchise while setting a bold course for the future of Chiefs Kingdom."

In December, Kansas lawmakers unanimously approved the issuance of sales tax and revenue (STAR) bonds, which will cover up to 70% of the stadium's cost and the surrounding mixed-use district, which includes the Chiefs' new training facilities. Hunt also stated that he and his family would commit $1 billion in additional development, incentivized by these bonds.

The new stadium will preserve the culturally significant tailgating atmosphere around Arrowhead, with Hunt emphasizing the importance of this tradition, likening it to major college football campuses and the anticipation that builds hours before kickoff. Moreover, the design will provide more than 20,000 parking spaces.

Hunt expressed excitement about the project, stating, "I've been thrilled with what I've seen. It's very, very exciting. Our fan base is going to get an incredible stadium, something that'll be iconic and serve the community well for a minimum of 30 years -- and hopefully closer to 60."

The exact site for the dome is yet to be finalized; however, Kansas Governor Laura Kelly confirmed in December that it will be located in Wyandotte County. The Chiefs have expressed interest in constructing the stadium near Kansas City, Kansas, close to the Kansas Speedway and The Legends retail and entertainment district, which is also the site of Children's Mercy Park, home to MLS's Sporting Kansas City.

The design aims to incorporate elements reminiscent of Arrowhead Stadium, featuring a larger hall of honor and an expanded team store. The new facility is also expected to increase luxury suites and amenities to enhance the franchise's revenue.

Beginning in the 2032 calendar year, the Chiefs plan to bid for hosting significant sporting events, including aspirations for Kansas City to hold its inaugural Super Bowl. Hunt also indicated that the stadium's field would be designed to avoid previous expansion issues when the World Cup returns to America in 25 or 30 years.

"We'll plan on bidding on Final Fours, College Football Playoff games, bowl games and, of course, a Super Bowl. The construction of this stadium is going to coincide with several other new NFL facilities, leading to competition in the bidding process. I'll make sure that the Chiefs and Kansas City put their best foot forward in that process."
