Eddie Howe departs Newcastle United after nearly five years

Eddie Howe departed from his role as head coach of Newcastle United after 231 games and nearly five years at St James' Park. His exit followed a significant 4-1 defeat by Bristol City in a pre-season friendly at Ashton Gate on Wednesday evening, after which he suggested that there could be changes at the club. Howe stated, "There has been a lot of change at the football club and potentially more to come," when asked about his outlook heading into the upcoming season.

Howe was appointed in November 2021 to replace Steve Bruce as the team's manager. In January 2023, the 48-year-old former Bournemouth manager led Newcastle to victory in the Carabao Cup, marking the club's first major silverware since 1955. He also guided the team to Champions League qualification with a fourth-place finish in the league for the 2022-23 season.

However, despite significant financial backing from their Saudi investors, Newcastle underperformed in the last season, wrapping up the campaign in 12th place, a significant drop from their fifth-place finish the prior season. From January 7, the team managed to win only five of their last 17 league matches. The club has also recently experienced roster changes, losing Sandro Tonali to Tottenham and England forward Anthony Gordon to Barcelona. Speculation continues around the future of captain Bruno Guimaraes.

Newcastle is scheduled to travel to south-east Spain later this week to enhance their preparations for the new season, including a match against La Liga side Valencia on Saturday, August 8, for their annual Trofeu Taronja (Orange Cup) game.
