George Russell Faces Disappointment After Belgian GP Incident

George Russell expressed that he is "numb to the disappointment" following another setback at the Belgian Grand Prix, which significantly impacted his championship hopes against team-mate Kimi Antonelli. During the race at Spa-Francorchamps on Sunday, Russell crashed out on the first lap after a collision with Ferrari's Lewis Hamilton, who received a penalty for the incident. Antonelli's victory marked his sixth win in ten races this season, extending his lead over Russell drastically.

Russell's comments referenced a series of issues he faced throughout the season, which have contributed to Antonelli's increasing dominance. These challenges included technical problems during qualifying in China, a safety car that altered the race dynamics in Japan, a retirement while leading in Canada, and unresolved penalties related to pit-lane speeding during the Monaco Grand Prix. After the last race in Britain, where Antonelli experienced a problem that prevented him from scoring, Russell believed the performance gap between their two cars had roughly equalized, leading him to consider his 25-point deficit a fair reflection of the season.

The early crash in Belgium was a bitter blow for Russell, who stated, "I made a good start, I made a great first corner, and I was choked up right behind [Max] Verstappen." He recounted how a malfunction in his battery led to difficulties: "The battery didn’t charge at Turn One. I exited the first corner 35% down on electrical energy. I got swamped by three cars. I shouldn’t have been in that position in the first place."

Russell emphasized that while the collision with Hamilton was a racing incident, he was frustrated to find himself in a vulnerable position after a strong start. He noted the challenges faced by Mercedes during the weekend, including struggling for performance relative to Antonelli, culminating in an unexpected engine issue that exacerbated his difficulties during the race.

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff acknowledged the performance discrepancies, indicating that an engine issue caused Russell’s struggles during the race. When looking towards the upcoming Hungarian Grand Prix, he stressed the importance of ensuring Russell is in the right mindset, recognizing the emotional toll of such setbacks. Wolff remarked, "I hope the numb feeling goes away. We will try to help to recreate optimism and positivity."

Despite Russell's misfortunes, it was clear that Antonelli had an impressive weekend, showcasing superior pace and control. Reflecting on his own experience during the race, Antonelli described the start as "crazy," noting that he found himself in unexpected situations while navigating early complications with the race dynamics.
