Hamilton takes pole for Silverstone sprint race

In a gripping qualifying session at the British Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton of Ferrari secured pole position for the sprint race scheduled at Silverstone. Hamilton outpaced his nearest rival, Kimi Antonelli from Mercedes, by a mere 0.011 seconds. This achievement marked another impressive addition to Hamilton's accolades as he continues to race on his home turf.

Max Verstappen from Red Bull Racing claimed the third-fastest time, crossing the line 0.321 seconds behind Hamilton. Behind him, George Russell of Mercedes, who is trailing Antonelli by 40 points in the championship, ended up in fifth place after Charles Leclerc of Ferrari.

Lando Norris, the reigning world champion from McLaren and last year’s winner of this Grand Prix, secured sixth place, while his teammate Oscar Piastri followed closely in seventh. The top ten was rounded out by Isack Hadjar from Red Bull Racing, Liam Lawson from Racing Bulls, and British rookie Arvid Lindblad.

Hamilton received a rousing cheer from the grandstands, filled with approximately 150,000 fans, as he crossed the finish line. "Wow. OK. I like it. I love this place. I love this crowd. I can't express to you how big a dream it is, and the flow you can get into around this place if you can get the set-up in the right place," Hamilton said.

Despite a disappointing performance in Austria the previous weekend, Hamilton highlighted how small upgrades had helped the team regain competitiveness. He expressed his delight in achieving pole position, stating, "We brought some tiny bits here. I am really pleased to get pole. It was only 10 milliseconds and the team really deserve it."

Antonelli acknowledged the close nature of qualifying and noted, "It was so close and it was a shame. But it was a decent lap. Congrats to Lewis and we focus on tomorrow now. Ferraris have done an incredible step forward so it is going to be incredibly tough. Lewis is in great form. We like the challenge. We will go for it."

Verstappen remarked on the pace of Hamilton and Antonelli, suggesting it could be challenging to contend against them in the sprint. Meanwhile, Leclerc expressed his struggles in adjusting to the new car setup, wishing to match Hamilton's level of performance.

Russell echoed similar frustrations, stating their struggles in the qualifying session, while Norris commented on how mechanical issues impacted his lap time precision. Despite these setbacks, all eyes were on the upcoming sprint race at Silverstone, set to start at 12:00 BST on Saturday, July 5.
