Junior Bok resilience and leadership key factors in win over England

Newsroom

The Junior Springboks contested their second consecutive Junior World Championship final after overcoming a determined England side in a hard-fought semi-final in Tbilisi on Tuesday evening. South Africa U20 head coach Kevin Foote praised the maturity, resilience, and depth of his squad following the match.

In a thrilling encounter, the Junior Boks faced considerable pressure, with England leading 20-12 at halftime. However, the South Africans produced a composed second-half performance to secure a 53-37 victory, allowing them to advance to the final against France on Saturday. Foote emphasized the importance of remaining calm and sticking to their game plan during halftime.

"At halftime, it was really about us looking after the ball a little better and making sure we could keep applying pressure on England consistently," Foote said. He commended England for their spirited performance, acknowledging that the conditions were challenging and that his team had started slowly. Despite these hurdles, he noted the maturity the players exhibited in the second half, sticking to processes and executing effectively.

The victory was largely built on the tireless effort of the forwards, who provided the foundation for creating attacking opportunities. Foote praised their work ethic and the leadership shown throughout the tournament. "The forwards have worked incredibly hard since this group first came together, and players in our leadership group have really stepped up," he remarked.

Foote also highlighted the vital role of the bench, which maintained the intensity and ensured there was no drop-off when substitutes entered. "The bench made a massive contribution," he acknowledged. "Some players have had to wait patiently for their opportunities, but when they come on, they make a real impact. We have a very talented squad with great depth."

Now, the Junior Boks prepare to face France, who defeated New Zealand 26-22 to reach the final. Foote recognizes the challenge ahead, describing France as outstanding and having shown tremendous spirit in their semi-final.

As the Junior Boks focus on recovery and enjoying their time together before the final, the match will take place at the Mikheil Meskhi Stadium in Tbilisi on Saturday at 18h30.
