Ryan Blaney's Late-Night Victory at Atlanta
Newsroom

Ryan Blaney dominated the Cup race on Sunday night at the EchoPark Speedway in Hampton, Georgia, which lasted until early Monday morning. A late move, facilitated by pushes from Bubba Wallace and Christopher Bell, allowed Blaney to pass Carson Hocevar on the outside during the final lap, securing his second victory of the season. Blaney led 171 out of 263 laps in a race that was interrupted by a rain delay lasting 3 hours and 9 minutes, concluding at 1:45 a.m. ET.
1. Long Night, Deserving Winner
Ryan Blaney delivered an impressive performance to clinch the victory. After suffering some damage from hitting the wall late in the race due to contact with Bubba Wallace, Blaney managed to maintain his speed, describing his car as still being a "rocket" despite a vibration caused by paint and cement in the wheel well. "I tried to make a move and just got loose and hit the fence," Blaney said after the race. "Luckily, it still drove fairly decent. I'm happy we were able to make back up for it."
2. Wallace Disputes Last-Lap Penalty
Bubba Wallace faced a penalty that relegated him to 29th place after initially finishing second. He was judged to have advanced his position by crossing below the yellow line that designates the racing surface. This penalty resulted in Wallace losing 27 points. Wallace argued that he remained in third for a sufficiently long time before finishing second. "[The rule] says ‘advancing your position,’ which I did not do," he stated.
3. Hocevar Has No Friends
Carson Hocevar, who led going into the final lap, finished third but described feeling isolated during that last stretch. He noted the absence of Chevy drivers in the lead pack, saying, "I look in my mirror, man, it’s all Toyotas. ... People basically are going to choose who is going to win the race. They sure aren’t going to pick me."
4. Bell Finished Second ... Again
Christopher Bell secured second place for the fifth time this year, falling short of a win again. He remarked on not having the speed to compete with Blaney, stating, "I could be up there in second or third, but it seemed like a couple of guys with faster cars could always get by me."
4 ½. What’s Next: North Wilkesboro
Looking ahead, NASCAR prepares for its first points race at North Wilkesboro in 30 years, having hosted the All-Star event there for the last three seasons. The race will consist of 450 laps on the 0.625-mile oval. Just six races remain in the regular season, with only Denny Hamlin and Tyler Reddick having clinched postseason spots at Atlanta.
