The Clause Complicating Ferran Torres' Renewal

Reports have emerged that FC Barcelona is facing a significant obstacle regarding Ferran Torres' contract renewal. As it stands, if Torres extends his contract, the club would have to pay Manchester City approximately 8 million euros due to a clause included in the transfer agreement between the two clubs.

Ferran Torres, who has a contract with Barcelona until the summer of 2027, has not yet entered into discussions regarding a potential renewal. This situation is further complicated by the recent interest from Paris Saint-Germain (PSG), which adds extra pressure as the club contemplates its options.

According to British newspaper The Athletic, confirmed by MARCA, the clause stipulates that should Torres renew his contract with Barcelona, they would owe Manchester City a sum close to 8 million euros. This stipulation was part of the transfer deal when Torres joined Barcelona in January 2022 for a fixed fee of 55 million euros, with an additional 10 million euros in variables, some of which have already been fulfilled.

However, beyond those initial payments, the additional clause regarding the contract extension poses a substantial financial burden on Barcelona, and this may be a primary reason why negotiations have yet to commence.

The FC Barcelona president, Joan Laporta, has refrained from confirming or denying the rumors concerning Torres' future amid the incoming pressure from PSG. He commented, "I have heard something about that, but we have no information. He is a Barça player," while attending the semifinals of the World Cup between Spain and France, a match featuring up to ten Barcelona players.
