Toto Wolff Critiques F1 Marshalling System After Hungarian GP

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff criticized the marshalling system during the Hungarian Grand Prix following a contentious race where backmarkers failed to yield to faster cars. During the final stages of the race, Kimi Antonelli and Lewis Hamilton approached lapped cars while fighting for third place, with Antonelli having started from P7 and securing P3 ultimately.

Initially, several drivers had been lapped midway through the 70-lap race, and Antonelli needed to navigate through backmarkers approaching the end. The track at Hungaroring, known for its narrowness, presented significant challenges. Wolff highlighted the inefficiency of the backmarkers, noting that they were defending their positions instead of giving way to the faster cars, which was against the expected conduct when blue flags were shown.

Specifically, Wolff reported instances where Audi driver Gabriel Bortoleto, among others, failed to easily allow Antonelli to pass, causing Antonelli to express frustration over the radio about the situation. This skirmish allowed Hamilton to close the gap from over 2 seconds down to just 0.5 seconds, intensifying the fight for the podium.

Wolff commented on the marshalling by stating, "The marshalling system not functioning, and cars in the back defending on a Lewis and Kimi fight is just, you know, disgraceful..." He emphasized that the telemetry engineers, who sit at the pit walls, needed to communicate better with drivers about the on-track situations.

Hamilton, who started the race aiming for a strong finish, found himself under pressure until the race concluded. George Russell, Antonelli's teammate, started from P6, fell to P21 due to an anti-stall issue, and eventually recovered to finish in seventh. As Formula 1 prepares for a month-long summer break after the race, Wolff remarked on maintaining a solid gap in the Drivers’ Championship and noted the performance of the team's car. He said, "a credit to a fast car, to a great team, at times unlucky... but also not good enough in reliability."
