Sawyers Overcomes Past Disappointments to Win Gold

In a remarkable turn of events, England's Jazmin Sawyers secured the gold medal in the women's long jump at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, putting her past disappointments behind her. The 32-year-old athlete celebrated this victory after overcoming a serious injury that had stalled her career.

Sawyers had finished fourth in the previous games in Birmingham four years ago and had encountered further challenges at the 2023 World Championships, where she failed to qualify for the final. As if that were not enough, she also missed the 2024 Olympics after undergoing surgery for a ruptured Achilles tendon on her take-off leg. Instead of competing in Paris, she found herself commentating for the BBC.

However, Sawyers left all those setbacks behind and achieved an impressive jump of 6.93m on her fourth attempt, which was enough to clinch the gold medal. She outperformed Nigeria's Ruth Usoro, who achieved a distance of 6.87m, and Brooke BuschKuehl of Australia, who recorded 6.80m. Reflecting on her victory, Sawyers expressed overwhelming emotions, stating, "It hasn’t properly hit me how this is the thing I’ve been telling myself all the horrible bits are for. The feeling is overwhelming. I will do the horrible bits 100 times over, I’ll do it and do it and do it. This is amazing."

Looking ahead, Sawyers plans to compete for Great Britain at the European Championships in Birmingham, starting on 10 August, while cherishing the memories of her success in Glasgow. She recalled winning a silver medal at the 2014 Commonwealth Games in the same city, which marked the beginning of her career. "It was a shock silver and I’ve held Glasgow close to my heart ever since. It was the start of my career and so sensational and I had the time of my life. I take that as one of the best moments of my entire career, but when you’ve done that there’s only one thing to do which is to upgrade."

In addition to Sawyers’ triumph, England's mixed 4x400m relay team took home a silver medal, with a standout performance from Lina Nielsen. The team, initially trailing behind Nigeria's Ella Onojuvwevwo, executed a successful final leg to secure silver.

Owen Heard also made a mark by winning a bronze medal in the men's pole vault with a jump of 5.70m, showcasing his improvement since finishing fifth on his Commonwealth Games debut in 2022. Heard acknowledged the high standard of competition and expressed anticipation for his Great Britain debut at the European Championships.
