AFCON Qualifiers: Super Eagles look to maintain dominance over Guinea-Bissau

The Super Eagles aimed to extend their winning record against Guinea-Bissau in a crucial 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying match on Tuesday in Bissau. Nigeria had previously won three of their four official senior international encounters against the Wild Dogs, who hosted the Group L leaders at the 24 September Stadium.

The match kicked off at 5 p.m. Nigerian time and was critical, as both teams had secured victories in their opening fixtures. Nigeria defeated Madagascar 2-1 in Uyo on Friday, while Guinea-Bissau began their campaign with a 2-0 win over Tanzania. The Super Eagles arrived in Bissau on Sunday evening on a chartered ValueJet aircraft, with the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) urging the players to remain focused against a formidable opponent.

Nigeria's head-to-head advantage against Guinea-Bissau dates back to the 2021 AFCON in Cameroon, where the Super Eagles achieved a 2-0 victory in a Group D match at the Roumdé Adjia Stadium in Garoua on 19 January 2022. Sadiq Umar and William Troost-Ekong scored second-half goals to secure the win for Nigeria.

However, Guinea-Bissau demonstrated their potential to upset the former African champions by defeating Nigeria 1-0 at the MKO Abiola National Stadium in Abuja on 24 March 2023 during the qualifiers for the 2023 AFCON. The Super Eagles responded four days later in Bissau, winning by the same margin through a penalty from Moses Simon. Nigeria also triumphed over the Wild Dogs 1-0 at the 2023 AFCON finals in Côte d’Ivoire at the Félix Houphouët-Boigny Stadium in Abidjan. This left Nigeria with three wins and one defeat in four official meetings, a record they aimed to improve on Tuesday.

Acting NFF General Secretary Emmanuel Ikpeme warned the Super Eagles against underestimating their hosts, emphasizing the need for full concentration during the match. He recalled a similar AFCON qualifying match in 2023, where Nigeria won by a slim margin, saying, “Victory is crucial on Tuesday, and I believe you will give your all for the three points.” Ikpeme stated that Guinea-Bissau was a formidable opponent that should not be taken lightly.

Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle faced the challenge of devising another tactical approach against the Wild Dogs, who had started their campaign strongly. Chelle acknowledged his team's previous difficulty in penetrating opponents' compact defenses, prompting him to adjust from a diamond formation to a 4-2-3-1 setup after the Madagascar match. He indicated that an analysis of Guinea-Bissau’s strengths and weaknesses was essential for success.

Notably, Nigeria would be without striker Victor Osimhen, who was sidelined due to a muscle injury, with Taiwo Awoniyi called up as his replacement. Nigeria's immediate goal was to secure a second consecutive victory, solidifying their position in Group L as they aimed for qualification for the 2027 AFCON, co-hosted by Kenya, Tanzania, and Uganda.
