Akron Offensive Coordinator Marty Whims II's Big Day

Marty Whims II, a University of Akron alumnus and fan turned offensive coordinator, expressed that his only wish was to avoid going three-and-out during his brief stint. Whims, who has a limited professional online presence, found himself unexpectedly in the spotlight after being chosen as the Honorary Offensive Coordinator for the Akron Zips football team. This opportunity arose from a raffle designed by Akron’s athletic director, Andrew Goodrich, to boost engagement in the football program after a disappointing NCAA men’s basketball tournament. The prize included attending a meeting with head coach Joe Moorhead to help script the opening drive of the home opener against Robert Morris.

Whims, who has been a season-ticket holder for over a decade, was thrilled when he learned he had won the raffle on his birthday, August 19. With no football coaching background aside from a few plays in high school, he relied on input from friends and family to prepare. Despite his nerves, he was excited about the chance to work with Moorhead, who has extensive coaching experience.

On game day, Whims made a live appearance on ESPN’s “College GameDay” with coach Nick Saban, establishing a connection to a wider audience and further stepping out of his comfort zone. During the game, Whims stood on the sideline, headset on, witnessing his dream come to life as he led the team out of the tunnel. The Zips’ defense forced a quick three-and-out for Robert Morris, allowing Whims' opening drive to commence. The first play featured a successful 12-yard rush from senior running back Jordan Gant, fulfilling Whims' goal to avoid a three-and-out. However, the series ended with a fumble after just four plays, totaling 23 yards.

Despite the brevity of his experience, Whims remained positive about the opportunity, acknowledging the unpredictable nature of football. After his on-field duties, Whims returned to his usual seats in the stands, surrounded by friends and family, enjoying the rest of the Zips’ 45-10 victory over Robert Morris, highlighting his journey from a season-ticket holder to an honorary coach.
