Alejandra Neira wins junior women's road race in Montreal

Alejandra Neira from Spain won the junior women's road race at the UCI Road World Championships in Montreal, clinching the title in a tense sprint involving five riders. Neira executed her final surge with just 150 meters to go, leaving Italy's Matilde Rossignoli to take the silver medal, while Anja Grossmann from Switzerland secured the bronze. This victory marked Spain's third gold medal in the championships, following the dual wins from Benjamín Noval in the junior men's time trial and road race events.

Neira expressed her disbelief at her achievement, stating, "I can't believe it. It's the best day of my life. I can't believe that I'm the World Champion. It's incredible." She reflected on her teammate Paula Ostiz, who had won the title the previous year, saying, "Paula is a big, big friend, also teammate, and to be the World Champion after her, wow, incredible."

Initially, Neira had been part of a breakaway trio with Grossmann and Rossignoli; however, they were caught in the final three kilometers of the race by Maria Okrucińska from Poland and Mirthe Mons from the Netherlands. Neira admitted that the arrival of the other riders affected her confidence, particularly as she noted, "When the other riders arrived, I lost a little bit my confidence, because Maria is a really good sprinter. But I tried to keep on her wheel, and then when I saw that I have to pass, I went."
