Arsenal Contacts Pro Ref Over Konsa Penalty Incident

Arsenal contacted refereeing body Pro Ref regarding the incident in which Ezri Konsa conceded a penalty during Saturday's match against Sunderland. The incident involved Konsa and Black Cats defender Dan Ballard, who were engaged in a physical altercation inside the penalty area. Referee John Brooks decided that Konsa fouled Ballard for excessive holding.

Following the match, Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta expressed his discontent with the penalty decision, stating that the club seeks an explanation about how the penalty was awarded. Arsenal emphasized that they wanted to prevent major refereeing decisions from affecting match outcomes, particularly since the decision had been supported by the video assistant referee (VAR).

The Premier League Match Centre confirmed, "The referee's call of penalty to Sunderland for a holding offence by Konsa on Ballard was checked and confirmed by VAR." Despite the video review, Arteta remained puzzled and stated, "I watched it 20 times and I cannot find a way to understand how they think to give a penalty in that situation, or the way the VAR has to intervene."

He went on to express disappointment over discussing such a critical decision after what he described as a beautiful game, emphasizing that this kind of issue could change the course of the season and could potentially impact their championship chances.

Match of the Day pundits Ashley Williams and Thomas Frank also commented on the decision, arguing that Sunderland's awarded penalty was unjustified and asserting that Arsenal should have been given a free-kick instead. Williams criticized the ref's decision, saying, "I think he’s got it completely wrong. It’s almost like a perfect hip toss in judo from Ballard. In no way is it a penalty."

Arteta reiterated his concerns about the integrity of officiating at this level, highlighting the significance of accurate officiating for teams who put in substantial effort through the season.
