Outcome Of SAFA Elections Revealed

Dr. Danny Jordaan has been re-elected as president of the South African Football Association (SAFA), defeating challenger Sandile Zungu at the elective congress on Saturday, September 12, 2026. Jordaan, who first assumed the presidency in 2013, will now lead the association until 2030. In the election, Jordaan secured 157 votes compared to Zungu's 82 votes. Zungu, who also serves as the president of AmaZulu Football Club, had voiced confidence in his ability to win leading up to the election, but Jordaan emerged victorious once again.

A total of 52 regions, 10 associate members, the special member National Soccer League, and 41 National Executive Committee (NEC) members were expected to vote in the elections. However, three regions—Amajuba in KwaZulu-Natal, Sarah Baartman in the Eastern Cape, and Pixley Ka Seme in the Northern Cape—were disqualified from voting, as reported by SABC.

Despite previously indicating that he would not seek re-election in 2022, Jordaan will now remain president of SAFA until at least 2030. During his tenure, SAFA has seen notable achievements on the football field, including both Bafana Bafana and Banyana Banyana reaching the knockout stages of a FIFA World Cup for the first time.

Additionally, Banyana Banyana won the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations, and Bafana Bafana finished third at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). In 2025, South Africa's U20 team, Amajita, won their first-ever U20 AFCON title. However, Jordaan's presidency has faced challenges, including allegations of corruption, money laundering accusations, and ongoing disputes over bonus payments between the senior national teams and the association. Poor tournament preparations, particularly at the youth level, have also hindered overall football development in South Africa.
