Pollock secures new Northampton deal exceeding £400K

Henry Pollock has concluded his contract negotiations with Northampton, stating it was ultimately "a very easy decision" to extend his contract with the defending Premiership champions. "I am very, very happy to sign here," Pollock said on BBC Radio Northampton. "I have been here my whole career, so it made sense for me to stay on the journey with such a young group of players, who are so ambitious. It was a very easy decision in the end."

The 21-year-old forward's new contract ties him to Northampton until the summer of 2028, hinting at the possibility of discussions resuming in about a year’s time. The England international, who gained considerable recognition after playing for England and the British and Irish Lions, was discussed as a "seven-figure player" during negotiations by his advisor Eddie Hearn. However, this valuation was unlikely to be met in Northampton or elsewhere in the Premiership due to the club's star-studded roster and the league’s £6.4m squad salary cap.

The precise amount of Pollock's pay increase remains unclear. While some sources estimated his new contract at £400,000 per year, others involved suggested that the figure might be higher. His remuneration is still lower than that of Scotland's playmaker Finn Russell, who, as Bath's marquee player, earns around £1m per year, but it exceeds most of his peers in the Premiership. Pollock's new deal surpasses the league's average annual salary (£191,000), the average for players aged 20-22 (£106,000), and the average for players with his level of international experience (£224,000).

Pollock's previous contract, signed in December 2024, was reported to be approximately worth £150,000. "I don’t create it, my team does," Pollock said regarding the speculation about his future over the past seven weeks. "It is one of those things that you have to take in your stride, but I am happy it is all done and I can focus on the rugby."

On the topic of Northampton aiming to become the first team since Saracens in 2019 to successfully defend their title, Pollock expressed optimism. "We have the squad depth and the belief in this group that we can do it," he stated. "Let’s see, hopefully we can create some magic along the way. Let’s write a new story."

Pollock played a vital role in Northampton’s title win last season and had discussed being open to offers, including potential moves abroad or to another sport. However, staying with Northampton—where he made his league debut in November 2023—always appeared the more probable choice. After winning a world title with England’s under-20s, Pollock established himself as a first-team regular. His speed and energy on the pitch contributed to his rising awareness among supporters.

His Test debut came in March 2025 against Wales, where he scored two tries, and he was later selected for the Lions squad. His achievements throughout the Champions Cup season led him to earn a spot on the shortlist for player of the year. Over the last three years, Pollock has cemented his importance not just for Northampton but also in the wider game, inspiring young fans and highlighting his potential for further growth, according to Northampton's Director of Rugby, Phil Dowson.
