Stick excited for new-look team against Wallabies

Springbok assistant coach Mzwandile Stick expressed excitement as the Boks prepared for a challenging match against the Wallabies in Perth on Sunday, wrapping up their current international season. Andre Esterhuizen, elevated to captain for the Test, shared his joy in stepping into the leadership role. The match at Optus Stadium kicked off at 11h45 (SA time) and was broadcast live on SuperSport.

Stick highlighted the significance of the opportunity for several players, particularly Canan Moodie and Handre Pollard, who were previously sidelined due to injuries. He also noted the potential of Herschel Jantjies, who had only played about 25 minutes this season but demonstrated promise in training. "We always want to build squad depth. This game against Australia allows us to see what the players can do, and they deserve their chance," Stick said.

Evaluating the threats posed by the Wallabies, Stick acknowledged their competitive edge, emphasizing that the match would serve as excellent preparation ahead of the World Cup. He recalled a previous encounter at Ellis Park where they squandered a lead against Australia, learning from the experience. Stick remarked on the strength of the selected Australian team, pointing to their powerful backline and recent form, having won four of their last five games.

"The key for us is to stick to our plan and continue improving," Stick asserted. He focused on the need to prepare against a formidable Wallabies side, which has shown improvements under new coaching staff. Stick acknowledged that their players are experienced ball carriers, posing a real challenge to the Springboks.

Esterhuizen, who debuted in 2018 and has emerged as a squad leader, expressed his pride in leading the team. "Being a leader at your franchise helps, but it’s easier here with so many leaders around. It’s a privilege, but the priority remains the team," he stated. He reflected on lessons learned from regular captain Siya Kolisi, noting Kolisi's composure and leadership qualities, which have greatly influenced him.
