Szoboszlai's Goal Takes Liverpool Forward While Spurs Struggle

Dominik Szoboszlai's stunning long-range goal capped a strong performance by Liverpool as they advanced to the fourth round of the Carabao Cup, defeating Tottenham Hotspur 3-1 at Anfield on September 15, 2026. Tottenham manager Roberto De Zerbi praised the quality of his squad but faced the disappointment of watching his team struggle once again in crucial moments, much to the discontent of the traveling Spurs fans.

In the match, Liverpool's Alexis Mac Allister opened the scoring with a powerful shot in the 21st minute. His goal came after some excellent build-up play, with young player Rio Ngumoha crucial in creating the opportunity. Liverpool doubled their lead shortly after halftime through Cody Gakpo in the 54th minute, taking advantage of defensive lapses from Spurs.

Spurs found a glimmer of hope when Conor Gallagher scored in the 69th minute, capitalizing on a defensive error by Liverpool's Giorgi Mamardashvili. However, Szoboszlai's remarkable goal in stoppage time secured Liverpool's place in the next round and diminished Spurs' hopes.

Liverpool head coach Andoni Iraola praised Szoboszlai's ability to finish from distance, stating, "The thing with Dom is you trust him to score before he shoots. With others you might think it’s too far out, but not with him." Despite some promising play from Spurs, including chances created by Lucas Bergvall and Mohammed Kudus, they failed to convert their opportunities, leaving De Zerbi frustrated afterwards.

The defeat marks another setback for De Zerbi, who made significant changes to his lineup after a disappointing draw against Everton. Iraola also shuffled his squad, showing confidence in young players who played key roles in the victory.

Despite the performance from his team, De Zerbi lamented the missed chances and stated, "We have to shoot more, we have to shoot better and we have to finish better the clear situations." Spurs have now faced challenges in their last several matches, seeking ways to improve as they move forward in the season.
