US wins 12th women's basketball World Cup against France

The United States defeated France 97-79 in the final of the 12th women's basketball World Cup held in Berlin on Sunday, securing their 12th title. France, playing in their inaugural World Cup final, initially held a two-point lead at half-time but struggled as the Americans surged ahead in the second half.

Breanna Stewart, who has been a consistent performer, led the scoring for the US with 22 points, while Jackie Young contributed significantly with 18 points, hitting four key three-pointers. The victory marked the US's 36th consecutive win in the tournament, extending their record.

Despite performing below their best during the tournament, the US team, known for their dominance in World Cups, came close to defeat in earlier matches against Italy and Spain. However, they managed to rally from a deficit in the third quarter by outscoring France 30-12.

France's Gabby Williams, who shined in their semi-final against Germany, scored well early in the final but could not maintain her performance in the latter stages. The French team was seeking redemption after their narrow loss to the US in the gold medal game at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

In the end, the US found their rhythm after a tense first half and increased their lead in the fourth quarter, ultimately securing the championship. Earlier in the day, Spain won the bronze medal by defeating Germany 81-58.
