Wales' Seren Lockwood ruled out for USA Test

Wales' scrum-half Seren Lockwood was ruled out of the second WXV Global Series fixture against the USA in Cardiff on Saturday after failing a head injury assessment. Lockwood sustained the injury during the first half of Wales' commanding eight-try victory over South Africa and is now undergoing World Rugby's return to play protocols. Her absence is a significant setback for Wales, particularly as she had formed a promising half-back partnership with Keira Bevan in a newly revamped backline.

In light of Lockwood’s situation, Lleucu George is set to return as fly-half, with Bevan moving back to her usual position of scrum-half at Cardiff Arms Park. Wales head coach Sean Lynn expressed concern over Lockwood's injury, stating, "It's always sad to see an individual coming off, but the HIA is great to have on board, we’re looking after her. She’s not going to be available this weekend, but I’m super excited to see the half-back combination that we’ve got this week."

Carys Cox's return to fitness following knee surgery performed during the summer provides Lynn with another backline option. Cox is able to play both center and wing and has shown notable progress in her rehabilitation. "Carys has been superb in rehab; she feels fitter, faster, and stronger," Lynn noted. "She always brings a smile; she’s always confident, and I love her athleticism. She will always beat that first defender, and the way we are playing now, she’s going to get some ball in hand."

Saturday’s match against the USA at Cardiff Arms Park comes too early for fellow back Nel Metcalfe, who is not expected to be ready until next month’s two-Test tour of Japan. "Nel is progressing really well with her rehab; we saw her today in some rugby elements, so fingers crossed we will be seeing her in Japan," added Lynn.

The forthcoming match against the USA will take place on Saturday, 26 September at 15:00 BST.
