Arteta explains reaction to Dowman red card amid criticism

Mikel Arteta, the Arsenal manager, explained his reaction to Max Dowman, the 16-year-old player, after Dowman's red card during the team's unexpected exit from the Carabao Cup against Fleetwood Town. Dowman was sent off for violent conduct following an incident with Fleetwood defender Harrison Neal, which occurred just before Arsenal lost the match in a penalty shootout. Critics, including Paul Merson, noted that Arteta appeared to speak to Dowman as he left the pitch, suggesting that the manager should have provided more support to his young player.

Arteta clarified in a post-match interview what he communicated to Dowman. "It was something that we discussed before the game," he stated, although he declined to elaborate further. In response to the criticism, Arteta mentioned that he had not reviewed the incident from a camera angle and accepted the referee's decision. He emphasized that even with a reduced squad, Arsenal created several scoring opportunities during the match.

When asked about the learning experience for Dowman, Arteta remarked that they had prepared for the match's emotional challenges. Merson criticized Arteta's approach, asserting that if it were an experienced player, the manager would have reacted differently and suggesting that a comforting presence would have been more appropriate.

Jobi McAnuff, another Sky Sports pundit, shared that he found Arteta's response to be uncalled for, arguing that while Dowman's actions were immature, the reaction was not fitting for a young talent with a promising future.

Despite the disappointing outcome, Arteta congratulated Fleetwood on their victory but expressed frustration regarding his team's performance. Arsenal had 19 shots, most of which went off-target, with Kai Havertz notably missing several key opportunities.

"First of all, congratulations to Fleetwood for going through to the next round in the manner they've done it," Arteta stated. He acknowledged that while the players showed the right attitude, they failed to convert chances into goals. "We have a responsibility to represent this badge in the best possible way," he said, emphasizing the need for improved execution in future matches.
