Barça Seeks Seventh World Title Against Veszprém

Barça sought its seventh world title against Veszprém. On Thursday (20:00 local time) in the New Administrative Capital of Egypt, Barça aimed for its second consecutive title in a rematch of last year's final. Former player Emil Nielsen's participation in the Hungarian club's lineup was uncertain due to stomach issues.

The Danish international goalkeeper, recognized by the European Handball Federation (EHF) as the best goalie for the last two seasons, did not play in the final group match, where the Hungarian team decisively defeated Burgan from Kuwait (44-19), a game in which Veszprém was already qualified for the final. Nielsen suffered from stomach problems and fever, and his condition would determine if he became available. His absence would represent a significant setback for coach Xavi Pascual's team, as the Nordic goalkeeper was critical in last year's final, where he made 27 saves to help his then-team, Barça, win.

A year prior, Barça reclaimed the world title after a six-year drought, having last won in 2019. Barça provided Carlos Ortega his first international championship at the helm of the team after dethroning Veszprém in a final that was decided after two overtime periods (30-31). That match intensified a rivalry that would see a new chapter on Thursday.

Both teams entered the final undefeated with full victory records. Barça won against Brazil's Pinheiros (33-44), Egypt's Zamalek (39-29), and Morocco's Montada Derb Sultan (51-15). Meanwhile, Veszprém debuted by defeating the host team Al Ahly (23-31), triumphed over last year's European runner-up Füchse Berlin thanks to Nedim Remili's goal with six seconds left (33-34), and wrapped up the group stage with another vigorous win over Burgan (44-19).

The varying levels of their opponents allowed Carlos Ortega to distribute playing time among the less regular players and manage efforts, putting Barça in optimal physical condition for the final with all players available. The Blaugrana team, which holds six titles, hopes to extend its lead at the top of the competition's records, with SC Magdeburg being the second most successful team, having three titles. Veszprém, the 2024 champion, aspired to win its second World Club Championship.
