Chelsea's Lacroix Set for Long Injury Lay-Off until January

Chelsea faces a major setback as defender Maxence Lacroix is anticipated to be sidelined due to a serious hamstring injury. Reports from multiple sources indicate that the 26-year-old France international could be unavailable until January, which may result in him missing up to 10 matches. This injury occurred at the end of the first half during Wednesday's Carabao Cup match against Liverpool, where Lacroix attempted to block a shot while sprinting.

Chelsea manager Xabi Alonso has remained cautious regarding the duration of Lacroix’s absence. At a media conference prior to the Premier League match against Manchester United on Saturday, Alonso commented on the defender’s condition, stating, "Max picked up an injury, and we expect that he's not going to be ready before the international break. So he will be a few weeks out."

This injury poses a challenge for Alonso, particularly since Lacroix has started in 10 of Chelsea's 11 matches this season since his transfer from Crystal Palace for £52 million. Only forward Morgan Rogers has featured more frequently in the current season than Lacroix. Despite having a six-man center-back roster, including Levi Colwill, Wesley Fofana, and Josh Acheampong as alternatives, the team is grappling with injuries to Jorrel Hato and Aaron Anselmino, further complicating their defensive lineup.

In discussing potential replacements for Lacroix, Alonso mentioned, "With Max's injury, we have Wes, we have Levi [Colwill], and Josh [Acheampong], who could also play as a center-back. Jorrel will be an option when he returns to the team. Wes has played, and even if he missed the penalty in the shootout, I think that he had a good game. He was consistent and strong, and I saw many positives from his performance. We know the level that he has had, and he's going to be important."

Additionally, Alonso provided updates on other team members, revealing that goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez is receiving a specially fitted mask to continue playing while recovering from a broken jaw. He also confirmed that midfielder Moises Caicedo managed to avoid injury during the midweek encounter with Liverpool. Currently, Chelsea stands fifth in the Premier League table, securing 13 points from eight matches, though they have only kept one clean sheet during this period.
