France Defeats Belgium, Validates Early Promises of Zidane Era

In a dramatic conclusion to its fourth match at the beginning of the Zidane era, the French team overcame Belgium with a score of 4-1. This victory served as a microcosm of the three previous matches, providing clear indications of Zidane's strategic vision: a possession-based 4-3-3 formation with high pressing, Kylian Mbappé repositioned on the left flank, the emergence of Michael Olise as a key offensive player, and the integration of several new faces.

With a fervent atmosphere, the French team faced a setback in the first half when they fell behind after a goal from Lukebakio in the 35th minute. However, they rallied in the final quarter of the match, scoring three goals in a span of just three minutes, thanks to substitutes Désiré Doué (77th minute) and Rayan Cherki (81st minute), followed by Olise's spectacular double (88th and 90+1 minutes). This thrilling finish not only marked Zidane’s first victory but also allowed for an early assessment of his tenure.

Since his arrival, Zidane has not locked in a fixed starting eleven but has established a clear tactical framework. The team plays in a 4-3-3 setup with a technical sentinel responsible for clean ball distribution and a creative midfielder, roles filled by players such as Rayan Cherki and Maghnès Akliouche. The primary strategy focuses on controlling possession, implementing high pressing, and recovering the ball as swiftly as possible. This attacking approach, however, came with risks, as exemplified by Lukebakio's scoring opportunity.

A notable shift in leadership is the repositioning of captain Kylian Mbappé, who has transitioned from a central role to the left wing. He opened the Zidane era with a goal against Turkey, and despite a subsequent injury, it is expected that he will continue in this new position.

One standout player during this initial phase is Michael Olise. The Bayern Munich winger has been pivotal for Zidane, providing critical assists against Turkey, scoring in the first Belgium vs. France encounter (1-1), and contributing to the draw against Italy (1-1) before his decisive performance against Belgium, delivering two goals and one assist in just 15 minutes.

Zidane’s debut period is also characterized by a clear transition towards a new generation, with players like Guillaume Restes, Jérémy Jacquet, Andy Diouf, Lucas Da Cunha, and Estéban Lepaul making their national team debuts. Leny Yoro was brought in to replace Ibrahima Konaté, who started in his first match, indicating immediate trust in the new talent. Both Jacquet and Da Cunha displayed promising performances, showing their ability to meet the required standards.

Despite some areas needing improvement, such as offensive realism, which had eluded them in previous matches up until the 77th minute of this game, the groundwork has been laid. With upcoming matches against Italy on November 12 and Turkey on November 15, this French team is poised to build on this momentum.
