Jorge Jesus maintains clear conscience amid Ronaldo saga

Portugal manager Jorge Jesus stood firm amid a rift with Cristiano Ronaldo that saw the superstar leave the national team camp. Ronaldo, 41, flew from Copenhagen to Madrid in the early hours of Thursday after missing a third consecutive training session. He had been seen exiting the Parken Stadium in Copenhagen after the match against Denmark on Wednesday, where Portugal secured a 4-2 victory.

Ronaldo later confirmed via Instagram that he left the team's camp due to comments made by Jesus. The manager had stated that the captain would not start against Denmark, just days after Ronaldo sat on the bench for the entirety of a 2-1 win in Norway. Jesus insisted there was no issue between himself and Ronaldo while overseeing Portugal's success against Denmark in his first match since taking over from Roberto Martinez.

In the wake of this situation, reports in Portugal suggested that Ronaldo could face a suspension of one to six months if he is found to have 'abandoned' the team. The Portuguese Football Federation's disciplinary code states that any player who unjustifiably abandons a call-up or fails to appear for training or matches can be sanctioned accordingly.

Ronaldo stated, "After the national team coach's press conference and following a conversation with the President of the Portuguese Football Federation, I have decided to leave the national team training camp. In due time, I will tell all Portuguese people the truth about the reasons that led to my departure from the national team. Now is the time to wish good luck to Portugal and to all my teammates."

Despite the ongoing saga, Jesus maintained that he has a clear conscience and is focused on the team's success. "I don't have a group in my hand. I have a group that believes in the coach's ideas. They believe in my ideas, and because they have a lot of individual quality, things become easier," he explained.

Support for Jesus was evident in the stands, with some fans showing solidarity while others made their allegiance to Ronaldo clear. One group supported Jesus with shirts proclaiming "Love you, Jesus," while others displayed banners showcasing Ronaldo's face.

As the situation unfolds, Jesus reiterated that the events will not separate the team: "The things that happen don't separate the group, they haven't separated us and they won't separate us." Now, the focus will shift to future challenges.
