Jorge Jesus Responds to Cristiano Ronaldo's Statement

Portugal's head coach Jorge Jesus responded to Cristiano Ronaldo's extensive Instagram statement regarding his withdrawal from the national team. Ronaldo released the nearly 2,000-word statement on Tuesday evening.

On Wednesday, as he left his home, Jorge Jesus acknowledged that he had read the statement but preferred not to comment further. He remarked, "I read the statement and now I do (like I do) every day. I'm going to the federation to work, think about the team."

Ronaldo's withdrawal from the squad occurred following his departure from the Portugal training camp after remaining on the bench throughout the 2-1 Nations League victory over Norway on September 27. He subsequently explained that he decided to pull out due to a "breach of trust" with the head coach.

In his statement, Ronaldo claimed that he and Jesus had initially agreed on a game-management strategy for the latest Nations League matches. However, he asserted that this plan altered during the opening game against Norway. Ronaldo conveyed that he expected to play for 30 minutes and, although he was asked to warm up in the second half, he did not get to participate. Additionally, he accused Jesus of reneging on their agreement to address his frustrations in a press conference ahead of the Denmark match, an understanding reached during a meeting with Al Nassr sporting director Simao Coutinho.

Ronaldo also took the opportunity to apologize to his team-mates and the Portuguese fans in his statement, stating his willingness to return to the national team in the future. He added, "The consequence of this act of mine must be assessed and punished by the Portuguese Football Federation. I believe the punishment should have no mitigating factors. I am not just any player. I am a team captain and that is an aggravating factor.

"I have already apologized but I know that actions must have consequences."

Despite Ronaldo's absence, Portugal triumphed in both matches he missed, defeating Denmark and then Norway, which propelled them to the top of Group A4 with four consecutive wins. His ongoing absence has prompted speculation regarding the conclusion of his international career, during which he has scored a record 146 goals in 234 appearances for his country.

After Sunday's victory against Norway, Jesus mentioned that the door remains open for Ronaldo, stating, "If he wants to, he’ll return to the national team."
