Itumeleng Khune praised Relebohile Mofokeng after the forward scored a brace in Bafana Bafana’s decisive 5-0 victory over Eritrea during the 2027 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifier held in Cairo on Wednesday, September 30, 2026. Mofokeng’s two goals in the first half greatly contributed to the team's commanding performance, allowing them to secure two wins in two matches, thereby maintaining their position at the top of Group D.
With this brace, Mofokeng’s goal tally increased to five in 24 appearances for the national team. His impressive season continued with his club, Royale Union SG, where he had already netted four goals and provided one assist across all competitions.
Khune, a former number one for Bafana Bafana, highlighted the quality of Mofokeng's finishing. "Yeah, beautiful strike with his left foot," Khune stated during an interview on SABC 2. "And I mean he surprised all of us because we know that he’s stronger with his right foot, but here, he connected the ball very well."
Furthermore, Khune emphasized Mofokeng's overall performance, particularly praising the combination of his first touch, run, and the pass from Oswin Appollis that set up the goal. "What a great run by Mofokeng. But what I like about it firstly is the first touch, the run, and the execution of the pass from Oswin Appollis. Then what a great finish by Rele," he remarked.
This performance not only reflects Mofokeng's individual talent but also signifies Bafana Bafana's strong start in the AFCON qualifiers as they aim to make an impactful statement in the tournament.
