Manchester United Board Holds Crisis Talks Over Carrick's Future

The Manchester United hierarchy held crisis talks regarding the future of head coach Michael Carrick after yet another disappointing defeat, this time against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday. The loss, a 3-0 setback, left Carrick's position uncertain. Following the match, Carrick maintained a defiant stance, expressing he did not expect to be dismissed. "I totally understand the situation," he commented about his prospects. "I’m not expecting anything in particular, to be honest. Carrying on as normal and I love this place."

Despite Carrick's resolve, the United executive actively considered his dismissal, as reported by the Guardian, with expectations at the club indicating a probable sacking. Eddie Howe emerged as the favored candidate of Jason Wilcox, the club's director of football, should a change occur in leadership. Howe's extensive experience in the Premier League places him ahead of other potential targets.

Furthermore, Howe would be a more affordable option compared to Unai Emery, another preferred candidate, whose compensation from Aston Villa would be around £20 million. Julian Nagelsmann, the former head coach of Germany and Bayern Munich, also received admiration from Christopher Vivell, United's head of recruitment; however, Wilcox’s opinion might carry more influence with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, who oversees football policy at the club. Antonio Conte is also considered a possible candidate.

In the latest match, Carrick left Bruno Fernandes out of his starting lineup, stating before kick-off that this decision was made purely for footballing reasons, not due to Fernandes's recent criticism of Carrick's tactics after a midweek Champions League defeat at Como. Carrick noted, "I’ll always do what I feel is going to be the best for the football club, whatever decision is made on anything really. So that’s kind of it. I’m not expecting anything either way."

This defeat marked United's sixth loss in twelve games across all competitions, leaving them with only one league win this season, placing them in 16th position. Their last victory occurred on 10 September against Sabah in the Champions League.

The club faces restrictions regarding announcing a sacking until it informs the New York Stock Exchange, which remains closed on weekends. A precedent was set when Ruben Amorim was dismissed in January, with the decision made after a press conference following a draw with Leeds but officially announced the day after.

Carrick acknowledged the home supporters at the match's conclusion, showing appreciation as he walked past a supportive Stretford End. However, upon his exit, boos came from the crowd directed at Fernandes, who followed Carrick alongside other players. "It wasn’t a farewell from me," Carrick insisted. "I’m feeling it for my players, they’re going through a tough spell. Some of it we can help, some of it the situation unravels and the boys are feeling it at the moment. Mixed emotions for the supporters to respond in that way."

Harry Maguire, the squad's captain during Fernandes' absence, asserted the team was "fully behind" Carrick. "Coming into the team last season, he turned things around and got Champions League football this season. As individuals, we’re not playing well enough. We have to look at ourselves and find something within ourselves to bring more to the team. That’s every player that I’m talking about. When things aren’t going your way, you have to do the basics well."
