Saka makes impact in Arsenal's 3-0 win over Lille

In the UEFA Champions League fixture on October 24, 2023, Arsenal secured a convincing 3-0 victory over Lille, with Bukayo Saka emerging as a decisive player. Manager Mikel Arteta had challenged Saka to aim for a scoring tally of "two or three" goals per game, given his evident talent and the expectations placed upon him. Although he did not reach that goal tally against Lille, Saka overcame illness to come off the bench and provide an assist for Eberechi Eze's goal, before scoring the third goal himself.
Saka, now with four goals in nine appearances this season, showcases his development as a pivotal figure for Arsenal. While much of the team’s offensive efforts center around him, there had been concerns regarding his ability to cope with increased defensive focus from opponents and previous injury setbacks. Saka's positioning has been adjusted by Arteta this season, with the intention of bringing him nearer the goal.
Prior to the match against Lille, Arteta stated, "That is where we need to get him. If he misses, so be it. The more chances we create, the higher the likelihood he will score more goals." Saka scored with a confident one-touch finish after he missed a late one-on-one opportunity in the Premier League match against Leeds. Arteta noted Saka's strong positioning, remarking, "He is doing well; he could have had another four or five goals easily. If he changes his mentality to focus on scoring a specific number of goals per game, he will find himself in more scoring positions."
Saka has hit the 20-goal mark in a season only once, during the 2023-24 season, and scored 16 in the Premier League. Recently, he also found success with the England national team, netting five goals in his last four matches, including a brace in a 7-0 Nations League win over Croatia. He now boasts 19 career goals in major European competitions for Arsenal, ranking second in club history behind Thierry Henry.
Arteta expressed satisfaction with Saka's performance after the match, especially considering Saka was under the weather before the game. "He came on and made a huge impact," said Arteta. He also recounted a light-hearted exchange with Saka following his press conference comments: "I just killed you in the press conference, good luck tomorrow." Saka’s readiness to address these challenges reflects his ambition to enhance his game further.
In a game that featured changes to the lineup, Arteta rotated five players from the squad that triumphed over Leeds. Noni Madueke transitioned to the right wing, while Mikel Merino, Eberechi Eze, and Viktor Gyokeres were included in the starting XI. Eze, despite limited playtime earlier, impressed with his goal, while Madueke's performance was inconsistent. Gyokeres, who had a standout previous season, struggled to make an impact before being substituted. Arsenal's substitutes, including Saka and Kai Havertz, complemented the team’s dynamics, paving the way for the potential for more accolades this season.
