In the Wuhan Open, Great Britain's Sonay Kartal made a notable return to tennis by defeating Anhelina Kalinina, advancing to the tournament's second round. After a six-month hiatus due to a back injury, the British number five, aged 24, performed impressively, continuing from her recent success at the Beijing Open where she reached the third round in her first WTA event since suffering a stress fracture.
Kartal overcame Ukraine's Kalinina with a score of 7-5, 6-3 in a match that lasted one hour and 31 minutes. Now ranked 170th in the world, she is set to face Swiss ninth seed Belinda Bencic in the next round.
Reflecting on her comeback, Kartal remarked, "I’ve thrown myself in the deep end, playing [my] first few events playing the best players in the world. It's definitely a challenge, but I'm happy with the level that I've managed to produce. There is still got a long way to go to get to back where I left off, but I'm happy. It's looking positive and I'm feeling good."
Kartal returned to competition last month in the Billie Jean King Cup, where she narrowly lost to the Czech player Marie Bouzkova, ranked 26th in the world. She then triumphed over Spain's Andrea Lazaro Garcia and Wang Xinyu in Beijing, before losing her match against Armenia's Alina Charaeva.
In her match against the world number 48 Kalinina, Kartal impressively served four aces and won 23 out of 30 points when landing her first serve. She secured her place in the last-32 stage after facing challenges, including Kalinina saving two match points.
In a separate development, Zheng Qinwen withdrew from her home tournament in Wuhan after winning the China Open, becoming the first Chinese player to do so. In a statement, Zheng expressed that she would not be competing due to feeling "very fatigued" after an intense series of matches. After undergoing elbow surgery last year and struggling with her form and fitness, Zheng's recent victory in Beijing marked a significant upturn in her career.
