Newsroom
Sunderland remains bottom of the Premier League table following a goalless draw with Leeds at the Stadium of Light. The match featured a scrappy first half during which Sunderland's Brian Brobbey came close to scoring on two occasions, but Leeds goalkeeper James Trafford denied him both times.
In the second half, both teams threatened to break the deadlock. Sunderland's Nilson Angulo had the better chances, while Leeds saw Ao Tanaka come close to scoring. The point from the game ended Sunderland's four-game losing streak in the Premier League, but they still occupy the bottom position in the standings. Leeds, on the other hand, remained in the top half, currently sitting in seventh place.
Brobbey returned from injury to make the starting lineup, one of six changes to the team following Sunderland’s previous match, a Europa League draw with Lech Poznan. Leeds made three adjustments after their draw with Manchester United the previous weekend.
The match began with Leeds pushing into Sunderland's area early on. Jayden Bogle skewed a shot wide, and Harry Wilson’s free-kick, which was met by Jaka Bijol, was comfortably held by Sunderland's Robin Roefs. Brobbey had an excellent opportunity when he fired a shot towards the bottom left corner, forcing Trafford to make a low save. Shortly after, Brobbey intercepted a careless pass from the Leeds defense, yet Trafford was quick to block his subsequent shot.
Despite Sunderland enjoying a bright spell in the first half, neither side managed to convert their chances before the half concluded. An unusual incident occurred at the start of the second half when Sunderland’s Nordi Mukiele sustained an injury after being accidentally caught by teammate Luke O’Nien, leading to Mukiele being substituted by Omar Alderete soon after the second half commenced.
As the second half progressed, Leeds continued to exert pressure on Sunderland's defense. Tarik Muharemovic's header from a corner was saved by Roefs. Sunderland's Angulo again tested Trafford with a fierce shot that was pushed away, and another effort from Angulo was soon denied as well. Leeds had opportunities as well, with Tanaka's shot being stopped by Roefs, and a potential Leeds goal was cleared off the line.
In the closing moments, Sunderland's Sean Longstaff was denied a goal by another save from Roefs, who was also instrumental in blocking a shot from Longstaff just in front of the goal line, ensuring the match ended in a stalemate.
