Venter Critiques Saracens' Media Obligations

Brendan Venter, the head of culture and technical director at Saracens, expressed his disdain regarding the Premiership Rugby media obligations, likening them to "something from an autocratic land". His comments followed a press conference appearance where he faced reporters alongside head coach Joe Shaw to preview the upcoming match against Bristol on Saturday. Previously, Venter, who returned to Saracens in the summer, had been fined £5,000 for his absence from a pre-season media gathering and had avoided questions before and after the team’s victory over Leicester.
At the press meeting, Venter initially provided short responses and criticized the expectation that he should actively represent the club in the media spotlight. "I have the desire as a human being not to want to talk," he stated, emphasizing that the focus should be on the team rather than himself. He recounted how he had previously communicated his desire to avoid media duties, noting, "If we get obsessed, get into an argument and fine a club, that for me does not make sense. It sounds like something from an autocratic land, not a democracy."
Despite his reluctance to participate in interviews, Venter acknowledged a passion for coaching and the dynamics within the team environment, calling it a privilege to influence players. He declared his intentions for Saracens, stating, "I promise you I don’t want to be competitive in this league. I want to dominate. This is not a team with a ceiling, this is something special."
Venter has faced media scrutiny in the past, including controversies during his first term as Saracens' coach, where he received disciplinary action for his conduct and comments regarding officials. His past included a notable viral interview following a reprimand for sending captain Steve Borthwick to a team-bonding event instead of attending a required launch event.
With the 2023 rugby season underway, it is anticipated that Venter will continue to confront media duties despite his previous avoidance. His previous tenure at Saracens did not yield silverware, although he left the team in a strong position which later won several titles under coach Mark McCall. Venter's current role is focused not just on coaching, but also instilling a culture of success within the squad.
