Vincent Kompany, the head coach of Bayern Munich, was discharged from the hospital following his collapse during training last week. According to Max Eberl, the director of sport for Bayern Munich, Kompany, 40, was diagnosed with meningeal irritation after he was admitted on Friday. Eberl provided this update before Bayern’s 6-1 victory over Magdeburg in the DFB Pokal at the Allianz Arena on Wednesday night, which took place five days after Kompany’s collapse while watching the club’s second team train.
Eberl remarked, "Given the circumstances, he’s doing well. He was discharged from the hospital on Wednesday. That is the biggest and best news for all of us."
He continued, "It’s a meningeal irritation that caused this incident on Friday. He will now rest and take medication, and I am certain that he will very soon be back on the touchline, operating at 100 percent."
On Friday, Eberl had indicated that it would be "weeks, not days" before the Belgian coach would be able to return to work, noting that Kompany had been ill with a virus.
After winning the Ballon d’Or in London on Monday night, Harry Kane disclosed that Kompany had called him earlier that morning to wish him luck. Kompany was absent for Saturday’s 3-1 Bundesliga victory over Freiburg, with Aaron Danks stepping in as head coach for that match and the cup win against Magdeburg. Currently, Bayern Munich sits atop the table on goal difference, level on points with Borussia Dortmund, whom they will face at home on Saturday.
