Arsenal Overcomes Slavia Prague with a Narrow Win
Newsroom

Arsenal secured a thrilling 2-1 victory against Slavia Prague at the Fortuna Arena, successfully navigating a second-half resurgence from the hosts to maintain their unbeaten start in the Champions League. The Gunners, who were the runners-up in the previous season, looked dominant in the first half, with Noni Madueke scoring the opener in the 9th minute after a slick assist from Viktor Gyokeres. Gyokeres himself doubled the lead in the first half, curling a brilliant shot to the far corner in the 38th minute after working in tandem with Mikel Merino.
However, the second half saw a shift in momentum as Slavia Prague started to press Arsenal more aggressively. They managed to register 17 shots in the second period, significantly increasing their attacking efforts after only mustering a solitary shot before the break. Arsenal had appeared in control but were forced to rely on key moments from their defenders, including a crucial goal-line clearance from Gabriel Magalhaes and several vital saves from goalkeeper David Raya. Just minutes before Slavia's late goal, Raya produced a spectacular save, parrying an Oskar Kubiak header against the post.
Wiktor Nowak’s close-range goal in the 90th minute brought Slavia back into contention, making for a tense finish for Mikel Arteta's team. Nevertheless, Arsenal held on for their third win in four Champions League matches, moving up to third place in the league phase table.
William Saliba made his return to the squad as an unused substitute following a back injury, marking a positive sign for the Gunners. Gyokeres, who had struggled to find the net earlier in the season, successfully found his form with this match, marking two goals in his last three appearances after previously going without a goal in his first ten games. Arteta praised his team's first-half performance but expressed concerns over their second-half display, describing it as 'sloppy'. The manager highlighted the difficulty of securing a win away in the Champions League and acknowledged the spirit of the Slavia Prague side. As Arsenal looks ahead, they will aim to build upon this win and improve their consistency in forthcoming matches.
