Nigeria’s Flamingos booked their place in the semi-finals of the FIFA U17 Women’s World Cup after securing a 1-0 victory over Venezuela on Sunday night, November 2, 2026. Azeezat Oduntan scored a late penalty in the 89th minute to clinch the win.

The quarter-final contest was closely fought, with Nigeria creating several opportunities but facing a formidable challenge from Venezuela goalkeeper Valeria Rebanales. The Flamingos dominated much of the attacking play in the first half, yet Rebanales made a number of crucial saves to maintain a level score.

Midfielder Favour Nkwocha received a caution as the Flamingos continued to press for an opening goal. Head Coach Hakeem Busari made his first substitution, bringing on Precious Oscar for Oluwakemi Adegbuyi, as Nigeria sought a breakthrough.

Despite their efforts, the deadlock remained until the 88th minute when the referee awarded Nigeria a penalty. After reviewing the call at the VAR monitor, the penalty was upheld, and Oduntan successfully converted the spot-kick with only a minute remaining.

The penalty was won by top scorer Oluebube Umejiaku, who played a vital role in setting up Oduntan for the decisive moment. This victory propelled Nigeria into the semi-finals, where they will face Brazil, who secured a 2-1 win over China in their quarter-final match.
