The opening ceremony of the Youth Olympic Games (YOJ) at the Abdoulaye Wade Stadium in Diamniadio, Senegal, left a lasting impression on spectators, athletes, and volunteers, all of whom described it as "incredible" and "magical." This event took place on November 1, 2026, shortly after the Olympic flame was lit by young judoka Aïcha Diop.
The stadium continued to pulse with energy as the unique blend of Senegalese and African cultures intertwined with Olympic symbols. According to the presentation document, the ceremony staged a journey through time, featuring symbolic characters and key moments designed to evoke emotions and create moments of joy, wonder, and surprise.
Among the audience, 11-year-old Yacoub shared his happiness with his family on the stadium grounds. Bright-eyed and full of excitement, he exclaimed, "Incredible!" when asked about his experience. His favorite moment? "The lighting of the flame," he eagerly stated. He vowed to keep all the images of that night with him, saying, "All of them!"
As the stands began to empty, Fatou Sabaly, a 15-year-old Gambian swimmer, expressed her delight, emphasizing how much she learned about Senegalese culture through the ceremony. "This shows that there is a lot of talent in Africa, and I hope many people around the world saw it," she said.
One performer, Siré, still donned her stage costume and radiated happiness after participating in the ceremony. "For us, it's a memory we can share for many years," she recounted, reflecting on rehearsals that sometimes took place under the hot sun or during Dakar's rainy season. "Tonight, Senegal wins. Africa wins," she declared proudly.
At the edge of the venue, Swiss volunteer Éléonore expressed her exhilaration after joining in the dancing. "It was magical, honestly, it swept us away," she said, recalling the ceremony's music and dances. "When they formed the African continent, I felt it represented unity; it brought everyone together. It was beautiful."
Abdul Wahab Fakiri, a coach for the Afghan Olympic team, admitted he didn’t expect such an astonishing celebration from Senegal. "It was magnificent. I loved the music and dances," he stated, marveling at both the celebratory atmosphere and the 30-degree heat. French flag bearers Raphaël de Boussac and Elsa Lepinay echoed similar sentiments, with de Boussac describing it as "an unforgettable moment" characterized by joyous dancing and vibrancy throughout the event. The response from attendees suggests that the ceremony could become a defining memory of the Youth Olympic Games.
