West Ham Appoints Scott Parker as Head Coach

West Ham United confirmed the appointment of former midfielder Scott Parker as their new head coach on a two-and-a-half-year contract. The 46-year-old replaced Nuno Espirito Santo, who was sacked on Tuesday after the club's disappointing start to the Championship season. Parker previously led Fulham, Bournemouth, and Burnley to promotion from the Championship, but had been out of work since leaving the Clarets in April following their relegation from the Premier League. He was set to take charge of the team for the first time on Wednesday when West Ham traveled to Cardiff City in the Championship.
First-team coaches Steve Potts, Gerard Prenderville, and Billy Lepine were appointed to assist Parker, while his former teammate Mark Noble was to work closely with him in his role as sporting director. The club was also expected to make further announcements on the backroom team in the coming days and weeks. Parker expressed gratitude in his introductory comments, stating, "It is a very proud moment for me... There was a warmth, a love, a feeling that I probably didn't have anywhere else."
He acknowledged the challenge ahead but remained optimistic about leading the club back to the Premier League. Parker emphasized the importance of the relationship he built with the West Ham fanbase and stated, "I feel privileged and honoured to be the guy that wants to lead us back to the Premier League."
Parker quickly emerged as the top candidate for the role following the sacking of Nuno, which followed back-to-back home defeats by Southampton and West Bromwich Albion. He became West Ham's fourth permanent manager since David Moyes left London Stadium in May 2024. At the time of his appointment, West Ham sat eighth in the Championship table, six points behind leaders Middlesbrough.
Parker noted his confidence in achieving promotion, citing his previous success in navigating the Championship. He stated, "I've been in this division three times and I've got out of this division three times."
West Ham recently had a shaky start to the Championship season after being relegated last year. They had won two of their past six games and suffered home defeats to Southampton (3-2) and West Brom (3-1), causing them to drop from second place. The club also saw the departure of several players, generating approximately £150 million in transfer revenue over the summer, which they used to strengthen their squad with key signings, including midfielder Arne Engels and winger Edvin Austbo. Parker now has the task of galvanizing the team to secure a pathway back to the Premier League as soon as possible.
