Antowne Kelly Reflects On MLB Debut Despite Loss
Newsroom
Antowne Kelly made his MLB debut on Friday night with the Pittsburgh Pirates in a losing effort against the Miami Marlins during the series opener. Kelly, the seventh-ranked prospect for the Pirates, pitched 2.1 innings, giving up two runs and securing his first MLB strikeout by fanning Jakob Marsee. After the game, Kelly expressed his emotions regarding the debut, stating, "It's a dream come true. I felt like a kid."
Despite his previous experience as a starter, Pirates manager Don Kelly confirmed that Kelly would serve as a bulk reliever for the team. He showcased impressive velocity in his debut, reaching speeds of 100 MPH. Manager Don Kelly acknowledged Kelly's potential impact on the bullpen, saying, "He can definitely be big for our bullpen, for sure, not just physically but also mentally. Today was one of those days that he showed what he can do. The whole thing did not go his way, but I feel like he's going to help us, and I believe his pitching will be huge for our team."
Kelly managed to regain some confidence during the game, retiring six consecutive batters after initially struggling. Following a leadoff double and a home run allowed in the eighth inning, he settled down to finish strong.
The Pirates will seek to bounce back and even the series against the Marlins on Saturday, with the first pitch scheduled for 4:05 p.m. ET.
