Table-topping Liverpool on the verge of historic milestone.
The Clarets face the daunting task of halting the Reds’ perfect start to the Premier League season as they host the Champions, hoping to bounce back to winning ways. Burnley vs. Liverpool kicks off at 16:00 [GMT+1] on Sunday, September 14, at Turf Moor.
History and form both suggest a difficult afternoon for newcomers Burnley [LWL], who must find a way to avoid extending their torrid record in this fixture. The Clarets, who suffered a 3-2 loss to Manchester United just before the break, have endured repeated struggles against Liverpool in the Premier League. They have lost 14 of their 18 meetings (W2 D2), including each of the last five since their famous 1-0 win at Anfield in January 2021. Burnley’s defensive record raises further alarm. They have already conceded six goals in their opening fixtures, which accounts for 37.5% of their total from the entire 2024/25 season (16). Should they ship two more here, they would match a historic low — equalling Portsmouth in 1987/88 as the earliest team to concede half or more of their previous season’s tally within just four matches. In addition, Burnley’s record against reigning champions has also collapsed over time. After winning four of their first seven Premier League games against holders (D1 L2), they have since lost 10 of their last 11 such matches, conceding 30 goals in those defeats. Their only success in this run was that famous 1-0 win at Anfield in 2021. A 4—2—3—1 formation with Foster in attack is expected here. Scott Parker will be without three players, including Zeki Amdouni.
Table-topping Liverpool [WWW] are not only making preparations for Sunday’s trip but also what could be a debut appearance for newcomer Alexander Isak, having wrestled himself out of Newcastle’s grasp. His arrival could coincide with a historic milestone for the Reds. Liverpool are aiming to win their opening four Premier League matches of a season for the third time, having previously done so in 2018/19 and 2019/20 — the latter campaign ending in the title. Victory would also make this the third consecutive season in which the reigning champions have begun with four straight wins, the first time in English top-flight history such a feat has been achieved. In addition, the Champions have won eight of their nine league visits (L1) against Burnley, including the last six in a row. Should the Reds extend that streak, they would equal their record for consecutive away top-flight wins against a single opponent, having previously managed similar runs against West Brom (8), Norwich (8), and Crystal Palace (7). A 4—3—3 formation with Hugo Ekitiké in attack may be seen.
