Giants of Africa Inaugurates 50th Basketball Court in Lagos

Giants of Africa reached a significant milestone on 25 May 2026 with the unveiling of its 50th community basketball court at King’s College, Lagos, Nigeria. Founded by Masai Ujiri, the organization aims to construct 100 community basketball courts across Africa under the Built Within initiative, promoting youth development and community engagement through sports.

During the unveiling, Ujiri expressed his pride, stating, "Reaching court 50 is a milestone we’ll never forget. To be able to have our 50th be in Lagos makes this moment even more special. Nigeria is home and King’s College is an institution I deeply respect." He emphasized that this achievement is also a shared success with the communities across Africa that have welcomed them, their partners, and the youth who will benefit from these facilities.

Giants of Africa launched the Built Within initiative in September 2021, and since then has built courts in 16 African nations. Each facility is designed to reflect the local culture and aspirations. The ceremony in Lagos featured remarks from significant figures, including Magaji Zachariah Cheye, the Principal of King's College, and Dr. A. Val Odife, President of the Kings College Old Boys Association in North America. Nigerian musicians May D and Mayorkun, both alumni of King's College, performed at the event, while media personality Ojinika Obiekwe hosted.

The latest basketball court was constructed with a donation from FORTA Advisors, further facilitating sports initiatives in the area. Following the unveiling, Giants of Africa organized a basketball clinic for 50 boys and girls from King’s College and Queen’s College, Lagos. A women's coaching clinic for 50 female coaches was also held the day before at Avi-Cenna International School, underscoring the organization's commitment to women’s empowerment through sports.

King's College, established in 1909, is recognized as one of Nigeria's oldest and most esteemed secondary schools, noted for producing numerous public officials and professionals. Earlier in 2026, Giants of Africa announced a new phase of the Built Within initiative called "Dribble for Peace," targeting communities in the Sahel region affected by conflict, instability, and environmental decline, thus expanding its reach to Cameroon, Chad, The Gambia, Guinea, Mali, Mauritania, Niger, South Sudan, and Sudan.
