Jannik Sinner Completes 'Golden Masters' at Italian Open

Jannik Sinner has etched his name into the record books by winning the Italian Open on Sunday, May 14, 2023, in front of a passionate home crowd. At just 24 years old, Sinner became the second player ever to complete the ATP Masters 1000 titles, achieving what is known as the 'career Golden Masters'. The only other player to accomplish this feat is Novak Djokovic, a 24-time Grand Slam champion.

Sinner’s victory over Norway’s Casper Ruud in the final, with a score of 6-4, 6-4, marked his record-setting sixth consecutive Masters title. His ability to recover from an early break down and showcase various skills — including effective drop shots — emphasized his mastery of the men’s tour.

"I’m really, really happy — it’s been an incredible last two and a half months," Sinner stated, also mentioning his victories at Indian Wells, Miami, Monte Carlo, and Madrid earlier this season. "There has been a lot of tension — especially here in the final. But it’s a learning process. I can’t know everything at 24 years old."

The rapidity with which Sinner completed the Golden Masters is remarkable; he had won his first Masters title at the 2023 Canadian Open. Winning the titles at a younger age than Djokovic, who was 31 when he won his first Golden Masters, adds to Sinner's accolades.

Tim Henman, former British world number four, noted the immense challenge of achieving such success amidst a demanding competitive landscape. "With the level of competition, the physical and mental demands, changing surfaces, travelling the world, winning all these matches is incredible. It emphasizes how complete a player Sinner is," he remarked.

Following his triumph in Rome, all eyes turn to Roland Garros, where Sinner aims to extend his achievements. Currently, he has secured 16 of the sport's prominent titles, including four Grand Slam championships. Thus far, he has captured the Australian Open twice, Wimbledon, and the US Open. A victory at the upcoming French Open would position him as only the 10th man to achieve a career Grand Slam.

As Sinner heads to Roland Garros, he is considered the heaviest favorite to win the tournament since Rafael Nadal. However, the pressures of Grand Slam competition pose their own challenges. If he wins the Coupe des Mousquetaires on June 7, it would place him only an Olympic gold medal away from capturing the sport's most coveted individual honors.

Sinner’s 14,700 points currently places him ahead in the world rankings, well beyond his nearest competitors. This season alone, he has won 36 of his 38 matches, with his only losses coming against Djokovic at the Australian Open semi-finals and Jakub Mensik in the Doha quarter-finals. Sinner’s performance indicates he is on a path similar to that of the sport's legends.
