Jimmy Adams Coaches Jersey in T20 World Cup Qualifiers

Jimmy Adams, the former West Indies captain, is currently coaching Jersey in the T20 World Cup qualifiers. Speaking about his team, he noted, "I think Jersey showed in the last tournament in Holland last year that they should be taken seriously." Adams, who has extensive experience in cricket, played 54 Test matches and 127 one-day internationals, served as head coach at Kent, and was part of two World Cup teams, reaching the semi-finals in 1996.

At 58, Adams aims to lead Jersey, one of the smallest teams in the tournament, back to the game's biggest stage. After losing a coach unexpectedly last year, he was asked by former Jersey boss Paul Hutchison to help out, becoming an assistant coach to the team. Adams admitted that working with associate cricket, which he hadn't paid much attention to previously, has been a learning experience.

Jersey faced Guernsey in a crucial qualifier final, emphasizing that they do not underestimate their rivals. Despite their small population of about 100,000, Jersey missed out on qualifying for this year's T20 World Cup by net run rate, with Italy advancing from their group in the Netherlands. They are now on the verge of reaching the final stages of European qualification for the 2028 T20 World Cup, which will be held in Australia and New Zealand.

In Cyprus, where Jersey is competing in the ICC 2028 T20 World Cup Sub Regional Europe Qualifier A, Adams expressed his pleasant surprise at discovering the talent within the team. "It was it was an eye-opener for me, I didn’t know what to expect, and it was really a pleasant surprise on quite a few counts," he stated. He praised the players for their resilience due to limited resources and noted the refreshing nature of associate-level cricket.

Jersey holds a ranking of 30th in the ICC T20 rankings and achieved notable victories, including a win against Scotland in the qualifiers for the 2026 T20 World Cup. Key matches in Cyprus have seen Jersey achieve considerable success against Switzerland, France, and Croatia. Adams expressed confidence in the team's ability to continue performing well and hopes they can secure a victory against Guernsey to advance.

Despite their small size, Jersey does have talent, including Asa Tribe, who has represented Jersey at various levels but is now eligible to play for England after spending time in the United Kingdom. Adams highlighted Tribe's achievements, including a notable score of 115 not out against Papua New Guinea, underscoring the capabilities of players from smaller nations. Adams reminisced about the changes in cricket since his playing days and suggested that the future looks promising for associate nations, expressing hope for a World Cup return with Jersey. "Fingers crossed, you just never know."
