Katherine Legge: The Fearless Racer Talks Life and Dogs

Katherine Legge has made a name for herself in the racing world, being recognized for the proper pronunciation of her last name — "Leg." With a racing career spanning over 20 years, she has participated in various disciplines, including sports cars, with 47 career INDYCAR starts and 19 national series starts in NASCAR. Additionally, Legge has an impressive record as an Acura factory driver, achieving four victories in sports cars, and has raced close to three full INDYCAR seasons, alongside several Formula E starts.

At 45 years old, the English native has become known for her fearless approach to racing. This year, she hopes to achieve a remarkable feat by competing in both the Indianapolis 500 and Coca-Cola 600 on Sunday, June 4, 2026, making her only the sixth driver ever to do so on the same day.

In an interview during the Indy 500 qualifying rain delay, Legge described herself as an English girl who loves adventure, food, and racing. She shared that her friends would likely describe her as direct and adventurous, mentioning her dog, Barley, who she usually brings along but couldn’t this year, noting how much she misses her. Legge emphasized the importance of emotional support animals in her life, recalling how her father enjoys walking Barley for relaxation.

Outside of racing, Legge has participated in skydiving, mountain biking, and an Ironman triathlon. She enjoys activities that challenge her and make her feel alive. However, she admits to being hesitant about bungee jumping due to a fear of heights. When it comes to food, she misses traditional English dishes such as shepherd’s pie and chocolate-covered pop-ups, commenting on the differences in chocolate quality between the U.S. and England.

Legge expressed her passion for endurance racing, appreciating the teamwork and strategy involved. Despite the challenges of sleep deprivation inherent to 24-hour races, she feels comfortable and confident in sports-car racing, which has been the foundation of her career.

She attributes her love of racing to the thrill of competition and the continuous search for improvement, rather than a deep technical knowledge of cars. Legge feels that being a control freak doesn’t always serve her well in such a collaborative environment, as she often worries about logistics, particularly regarding her ambitious goal of completing both races.

Regarding her double racing endeavor, Legge views it as a cool challenge rather than a legacy project, although she acknowledges the significance of showing that barriers can be overcome with determination. Her lifelong passion for racing, sparked at a young age with her father, continues to drive her commitment and dreams in her professional career.
