Wales' Jorja Aiono Reflects on Samoan Heritage

Wales' rising star Jorja Aiono expressed pride in her Samoan heritage after an impressive debut in the Women's Six Nations. The Swansea teenager made a notable impact against Scotland, leading to further starts against France and England. Throughout her debut, Aiono showcased her physicality and work rate, earning her praise from coaches and fans alike.

"I play like my dad," Aiono stated, referring to her father, Nio, a former player for Neath, Ebbw Vale, Glamorgan Wanderers, and Llandovery. She highlighted the influence of her family on her playing style, noting her uncle Afa Aiono’s past leadership of the Samoa Sevens and her brother’s involvement with the under-20s team.

Aiono's journey into top-flight rugby began at Gowerton RFC, and she also excelled in hockey. Currently pursuing sports science at Hartpury University, she plays for the Premiership Women's Rugby champions Gloucester-Hartpury. Her recent performances for the Celtic Challenge side Brython Thunder captured the attention of Wales head coach Sean Lynn, leading to her inclusion in the Six Nations squad.

"It was such a shock, though it’s nice to see the coaches believe in me," Aiono remarked after starting her first match at Principality Stadium. Her enthusiasm for the game has been palpable, with Aiono admitting, "I just couldn’t stop smiling on the day; it’s all come so quickly. It’s been a privilege."

Lynn praised Aiono's physicality, stating, "That’s where the game is going. We need to be sure that we’re working hard for each other. That’s everything in a nutshell about Jorja Aiono." Feedback from veterans like Phillippa Tuttiett emphasized Aiono's seamless integration into the team, with discussions regarding her potential inclusion in the next women’s British and Irish Lion tour of New Zealand.
