In the 2026 Wimbledon qualifying rounds, Britain’s Esther Adeshina achieved a significant victory, moving her just two wins away from a spot in the main tournament. The 24-year-old triumphed over Japan's former top-50 player Moyuka Uchijima in a hard-fought match, winning 6-1, 3-6, 7-5 under challenging heat conditions in Roehampton.
Ranked 514 in the world, Adeshina praised the experience, stating it was a "dream" to compete in Wimbledon qualifying. Next, she is set to face France's Harmony Tan, who gained recognition for defeating Serena Williams on her way to the fourth round at Wimbledon in 2022.
"That was unbelievable," Adeshina reflected after her match. "I was just thinking one point at a time. I was looking over to my team a lot, just trying to breathe and enjoy the moment. It means a lot to me, being British and playing at home. I have been coming to watch Wimbledon since I was young - it’s a dream."
Meanwhile, in other qualifying matches, 15-year-old Daniella Britton, who received a wildcard after winning the under-16s and under-18s national championships, faced Argentine Julia Riera but was edged out 2-6, 6-2, 6-4. Another British player, Heather Watson, advanced with a convincing 6-2, 6-2 victory over Egyptian 21st seed Mayar Sherif.
On another note, British qualifier Giles Hussey made headlines by upsetting French Open semi-finalist Matteo Arnaldi in Eastbourne. Hussey, ranked 293rd, defeated world number 30 Arnaldi with a score of 6-4, 6-2 to advance to the second round, where he will play Quentin Halys from France. Arnaldi had been returning to competition after an illness forced him to withdraw from the last-four match at Roland Garros.
In women's singles, Italy’s top seed Jasmine Paolini was defeated by Germany's Tatjana Maria, who won 6-4, 6-3. In men's doubles, Brit Joe Salisbury and American Rajeev Ram won their opening match against French duo Terence Atmane and Luca Sanchez, with a score of 6-1, 6-3.
As players continue to face the challenges of qualifying, the excitement surrounding Wimbledon grows, highlighting emerging talents and seasoned competitors alike.
