Keegan Swenson and Sofia Gomez Villafañe, both riding for Specialized Off-road, returned to the forefront at the 2026 SBT GRVL held in Steamboat Springs, Colorado, on June 29. Each cyclist launched solo attacks in the later segments of the 108-mile black course. This victory marked Swenson's fourth title in the elite men's category, while it was Villafañe's second win in the elite women's race.
The 2026 Steamboat Springs long black course incorporated a single-loop circuit through Routt County, prominently featuring the washed-out gravel road known as Cow Creek, which presented a crucial technical descent in the final 12 miles after serving as the first climb at the race's start.
Three elite men emerged at the front after the Cow Creek climb: Nathan Spratt (Ventum + Voler), Adam Roberge (Felt UN1TD), and John Borstelmann (Ventum), establishing a four-minute lead initially. However, after the next 24 miles, which included the longest ascent of the day—offering uneven pitches of 7%-9%—Swenson and five other riders, including Henry Nelson (Lunchbox Racing), Cobe Freeburn (Trek Driftless), Alexey Vermeulen (ENVE), Pete Stetina (Canyon), and John Keller, caught up with the leading trio.
In the race's mid-section, Swenson found himself amid a new lead group that included Freeburn, Roberge, and Nelson, while Spratt, Vermeulen, Stetina, and Keller were chasing closely behind, and Borstelmann fell off the pace.
A lengthy descent led into the second-largest climb of the route, approximately nine miles on gravel. After cresting near Hayden, with 35.5 miles remaining to return to Steamboat Springs, Swenson made his move on a flat section of the descent. By the time he approached the return ascent to Cow Creek, he had crafted a gap of two and a half minutes over his pursuers.
In the elite women's event, Sofia Gomez Villafañe experienced a thrilling finish, making a late catch and pass of Sarah Lange, securing her victory. Lauren Stephens rounded out the top three for the elite women's race.
