USMNT's second string offers mixed results in loss to Turkiye

Inglewood, Calif. – The U.S. men's national team (USMNT) faced a mixed results scenario when head coach Mauricio Pochettino fielded a heavily-rotated squad for Thursday's match against Turkiye. Despite having made nine changes to the lineup that previously secured a 2-0 victory over Australia, the team struggled in a 3-2 defeat, which interrupted the momentum built during the tournament so far.
The game started promisingly for the USMNT when Auston Trusty scored his first World Cup goal just three minutes in, showcasing the potential of the altered lineup. Pochettino's high-intensity approach seemed to inspire the players, as they outshot Turkiye eight to four in the first half. Sebastian Berhalter's assist on Trusty’s goal further validated Pochettino's roster choices, leveraging the midfielder's set-piece abilities.
However, things quickly deteriorated after the bright start. Center back Mark McKenzie, making his World Cup debut, was caught off guard by Adra Guler's goal in the 10th minute, followed by poor positioning from goalkeeper Matt Turner. Twenty minutes later, Joe Scally's mistakes allowed Orkun Kokcu to put Turkiye ahead.
Other USMNT players failed to make significant contributions, including Tim Weah, who had been a starter in the past but struggled to leave an impact during the match. The intensity that characterized the beginning of the game faded, and both teams concluded the first half in lackluster form.
As players from the bench watched, none of those who replaced the starters made a compelling case for inclusion in the lineup for the upcoming round of 32 match. The defeat served as a reminder that the USMNT appeared to rely heavily on their top performers, underlining a lack of depth on the bench when compared to earlier triumphs against Paraguay and Australia.
This outcome was not surprising, as Pochettino's side had previously grappled with lineup issues leading up to the World Cup, often missing key starters. While the Americans managed to cope without Christian Pulisic against Australia, the absence of their best players against Turkiye revealed vulnerabilities within the team.
